A History of Beach Resorts

A Walk through the Beach Resort Time Tunnel

The Balneario (beach resort) History Room

This room shows bathers of the past; original photographs of the old balnearios (beach resorts) of southern South America, such as Punta del Este and Piriápolis in Uruguay, Mar del Plata in Argentina and the history of Copacabana Beach in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, which is almost stranger than fiction. There is also a collection of objects that might have been used by the inhabitants of a beach house many years ago: postcards, books, tins, jars, bottles, suitcases, toys and many more items.

When were men allowed to go bare-chested to the beach?
When were men allowed to approach a woman bathing in the sea at a distance of less than 30 metres?
